Why Phoenix Is a Photoshoot Dream
Phoenix offers some of the best places for photoshoots in Phoenix due to dramatic and varied landscapes. You’ll find desert trails, red rock mountains, river bends, and botanical gardens all within easy reach. The light here can be intense and unforgiving during midday, but the golden hour and blue hour windows are short and stunning when they arrive. Plan carefully to catch that softer, warmer light before the sun gets too high or drops too quickly.

As a local photographer, I’ve shot in these spots for years. I know exactly when the light works best, which trails are best, which areas require permits, and how seasonal changes affect each location.
Below are 7 of the best places for photoshoots in Phoenix, with details on timing, access, and what makes each one stand out.
Top Desert & Mountain Locations
These spots offer the classic Phoenix-area desert drama—saguaros, red rocks, and mountain backdrops—with easy access and big visual payoff. All are within a 45-minute drive from central Phoenix.
Lost Dutchman State Park
Superstition Mountains, golden cholla cacti, and fiery red rock formations at sunset. Sunrise or sunset for soft light and fewer hikers.

- Daily Entrance: One person/vehicle – $10.00. Two-four/vehicle – $20.
- Permits: No permit needed because it is an Arizona State Park.
- My Favorite Spots: The Saguaro and Cholla parking lot areas are my go-to for photos. Saguaro offers classic saguaro silhouettes with the Superstition Mountains as a backdrop and a cute rustic fence that makes for a fun element to lean on or sit on during a session. Cholla offers the same great views along with a few areas that have wide open space – great for family photo sessions.
- Local’s Tip: Want free entry? Take a right down N First Water Rd. The first pullout on the left is just outside the state park boundary—no entrance fee required. It’s a great spot to park and access similar trails.
- Photography Tip: The sun rises behind the Superstition Mountains, so if you prefer backlit photos, this is the better time of day to shoot here.
Salt River (Water Users Site)
A pristine river bend with saguaros lining the banks, steep mountain cliffs rising dramatically behind, and the chance to spot wild horses roaming freely. Golden hour turns the water gold and the cliffs glow. This is personally my favorite place to shoot because of the incredible variety of nature in one spot. You’ll find lush river greenery, classic desert saguaros, prickly pear cactus dotting the landscape, and large boulders perfect for sitting photos.

- Access: Water Users parking area off Bush Highway—easy and free.
- Parking Fee: $5.
- Local’s Tip: Book a weekday session to avoid other groups taking photos.
- Permits: None for small shoots.
Phon D Sutton
This spot includes the Salt River at the recreation site for photos by the river with gentle flows and rocky riverbanks, but I personally spend more time on the trails leading up to it. Those trails are lined with saguaros, cholla, and prickly pear cactus, all with Mount McDowell as the backdrop. The desert landscape here feels open and authentic, perfect for wide shots and intimate portraits against the mountain silhouette.

- Access: For access to the riverbank park at the Phon D Sutton Recreation Site – $5 for parking. Additionally, about 0.3 miles before the recreation site park at a dirt turnout on the right side along Phon D Sutton Road—no parking fee.
- Permits: None required for small personal or professional shoots.
This area gives you classic Sonoran Desert vibes without the crowds or fees of busier parks—ideal for couples or individuals wanting raw, natural backdrops with a mountain presence.
McDowell Sonoran Preserve
This 30,000+ acre preserve in the McDowell Mountains offers some of the best panoramic desert vistas in the Phoenix area. The trails feature views of the nearly 4,000′ Thompson Peak, sweeping views of the valley and distant mountains, saguaros and many other desert plants.

- Access: Gateway Loop trailhead off Thompson Peak Parkway—easy parking, well-marked entrance.
- Entry Cost: Free (no vehicle or per-person fee).
- Permits: None required for small professional shoots.
- Photography Tip: The sun rises behind the McDowell Mountains, so if you prefer backlit photos this is the better time of day to shoot.
This spot gives you true Sonoran Desert scale and variety without the crowds of more famous parks. Perfect for adventure-style sessions or anyone wanting big-sky, big-rock backdrops.
Usery Mountain Regional Park
Usery Mountain Regional Park offers the classic Sonoran desert look with nicely manicured trails that make shooting comfortable and accessible. It’s close to Phoenix (about 45 minutes from central areas), so it’s easy to reach and ideal for quick sessions with big visual impact.

- Access: Main entrance off Usery Pass Road (north of Ellsworth Rd); well-marked and easy to find.
- Entry Cost: $10 per vehicle.
- Photography Tip: My favorite place to do sessions is on Merkle Trail which offers a good vantage point of all the surrounding mountains
- Permits: None required for personal or small professional shoots (check Maricopa County Parks website for updates).
Botanical & Urban Spots
Desert Botanical Garden
The Desert Botanical Garden stands out for its manicured, uniform desert plants. You’ll find perfectly shaped saguaros, agaves, and cacti in thoughtful displays. Paved paths wind between them, giving photos a clean, elegant look and allowing you to wear heels easily for a more polished, comfortable session. The structured layout makes it ideal for composed portraits or editorial-style shots while still feeling connected to the desert.

- Access: Conveniently located near central Phoenix.
- Entry Cost: $34.95 adult. Purchase admission here.
- Local’s Tip: If you’re an Arizona resident, get free entry for two by picking up a library pass at any Phoenix Public Library branch (check availability in advance).

This spot delivers a refined, controlled aesthetic that’s hard to find in wilder desert areas—ideal for couples wanting elegant, timeless images.
Papago Park
Papago Park features unique red rock formations made of sandstone—dramatic, layered buttes that make you feel like you’re in Moab, even though you’re right in the heart of the city. There’s also a scenic pond with palm trees and lush greenery, offering a serene contrast to the desert landscape and great reflections for portraits.
