The Magic of Glacier Elopements in Alaska
Glacier elopements in Alaska feel like something out of a dream—endless blue ice, towering mountains, and total solitude except for the hum of the helicopter and the two of you saying your vows. There’s nothing else like standing on a glacier, wind in your face, knowing the moment is completely yours.

September 2025 Glacier Elopement
I’ve had the pleasure of photographing several glacier elopements over the years. In September 2025, I photographed one of the most memorable ones yet: a 3 hour helicopter adventure with Outbound Heli Adventures. The couple stayed in a cozy on-site cabin with incredible Palmer Valley views, got ready there, and turned the whole day into a private, multi-part celebration. I was there for every landing, every vow, every laugh over tundra berries, and I’m sharing the full step-by-step so you can picture exactly what your own glacier elopement could look like.

Why These Tours Create Unforgettable Moments
As your local adventure photographer, I’ve seen how these flights transform a wedding into an unforgettable experience. The short tour length keeps it doable, the landings feel exclusive, and the fall colors in September make everything pop. If you’ve ever thought about eloping on ice in Alaska, this real story will show you how magical—and surprisingly straightforward—it can be.
Why a Helicopter Glacier Elopement Is Unforgettable
The Privacy and Scale of Glacier Landings
A helicopter glacier elopement stands out because it gives you access to places most people never reach. You’re not hiking for hours or sharing the view with crowds—you land directly on the ice, say your vows in complete privacy, and the only backdrop is endless blue-white glacier and jagged peaks.
Why 3–4 Hours Is the Sweet Spot
A 3–4 hour tour hits the sweet spot. About 30 minutes each way to reach the first landing, plus time for the helicopter to wind down before you step out and restart when moving on. That leaves plenty of room for multiple stops without turning the day into a marathon. In my experience, longer tours can feel exhausting, but this length keeps the energy high and the moments special.
The Variety That Makes It Epic
What makes it even better is the variety: one landing for the ceremony on Knik Glacier, another for portraits on an alpine slope overlooking a hanging glacier with colorful fall tundra, and a third for something fun like picking tundra berries or a champagne toast. It’s not just “stand on ice and say I do”—it’s a full adventure packed into a few hours.

A Lifetime Memory – My Perspective as a Born-and-Raised Alaskan
This will truly be an experience you remember for a lifetime. I’m born and raised Alaskan, and even after all these years, I still get teary-eyed when I take in the beauty of the backcountry parts of Alaska—the untouched ice, the vast silence, spotting wildlife like mountain goats and bears in the distance. What greater way to begin a marriage than being awestruck by nature’s beauty and sharing that moment with your favorite person? It’s raw, intimate, and sets the tone for a life full of wonder together.
The Full Step-by-Step Timeline
Getting Ready at the On-Site Cabin
The day started at the cabin walking distance to where the couple would fly out — with beautiful views of the Palmer mountains. The couple stayed there for several nights, so getting ready felt relaxed and private. They did hair, makeup, and final touches in the cabin before heading out.

Takeoff and Scenic Flight to Knik Glacier
We took off with Outbound Heli Adventures for the 3-hour tour. The flight to the first landing takes about 30 minutes each way and offers beautiful views of the Knik River winding below, leading to Knik Lake where you’ll spot floating icebergs as you approach the glacier. That timing leaves plenty of space for three meaningful stops without rushing.
First Landing: Knik Glacier
They stepped onto the ice for the ceremony. The pilot officiated the vows right there on the glacier—short, personal, and incredibly powerful with nothing but blue ice and mountains around them.

Second Landing: Alpine
We touched down overlooking a hanging glacier. The fall tundra was at peak color—reds, oranges, yellows everywhere—making for vibrant portraits against the dramatic backdrop. Here, the couple also exchanged private vows, just the two of them, while I stepped back to capture photos from a distance. It was a quiet, intimate moment after the formal ceremony on the glacier.

Third landing: Mountainside
A quick stop to pick tundra berries. It added a fun, lighthearted moment—laughing, tasting, just enjoying the wild together.

Return to the Cabin for Celebration and Portraits
We flew back to Palmer and returned to the cabin. They shared a private toast, cut a small cake, and we wrapped with final portraits in the softer evening light. The whole day stayed focused and exciting—no wasted time, just the right mix of ceremony, adventure, and quiet celebration.
Behind-the-Scenes Details & Logistics
Here are the practical pieces that made this glacier elopement work so well.
Helicopter Company
Outbound Heli Adventures handled everything smoothly. I like working with them because it’s a simple operation that feels more personal—unlike larger companies with big fleets sending out multiple groups at once. They’re reliable, know the glaciers well, and the pilots double as officiants for ceremonies. They’re also very flexible—if the booked day has poor weather, you can often make a last-minute adjustment to reschedule. For 2026, the 3-hour elopement package tour costs $3,200 which includes 3 seats in the helicopter, which covers the couple plus the photographer (me), so no extra coordination or separate flight needed.
Lodging
They rented an on-site cabin for several nights. It’s walking distance to the helipad, so no rushing around. The views over Palmer Valley were stunning first thing in the morning and last thing at night—perfect for getting ready photos and winding down after the flight.
Timing & Season
June through September is the window for glacier elopements. September is best if you want those vibrant fall colors in the tundra and blueberries to pick. June may still have snow lingering in the mountains. July and August usually the snow has melted, with wildflowers like lupine and fireweed blooming across the landscape. In September, sunsets return after the long days of midnight sun retreat, giving you that golden-hour glow and softer evening light for portraits.
What to Pack & Prepare
Sturdy shoes (ice can be slippery), layers for changing temps, sunglasses (glare off ice is intense), and water/snacks. Brides should consider a long-sleeve dress or bringing a coat like fur for warmth; thermal tights under the dress help too. Temperatures can fluctuate a lot from the alpine landing to the glacier—it can feel like standing in a refrigerator depending on the day. Bring a small cake or toast setup if you want a cabin celebration to follow.
Permits & Rules
No special permit required for the heli tour itself (the company handles landing permissions), but always check current regulations.
This setup kept the day exciting yet manageable. The short flight, multiple landings, and private cabin return gave them adventure without chaos. Couples love how it feels epic but still intimate—exactly what a glacier elopement should be.
