Mountain and desert plant views from the Salt River photoshoot location in Arizona

Why the Salt River is One of the Best Photoshoot Locations Near Phoenix

The Salt River is one of the most unique photoshoot locations in the Phoenix area. Flowing water cuts through the Sonoran desert with saguaro cacti lining the banks. Add golden desert light and the occasional wild horses and you have a location that is hard to beat. Overall it is a setting that photographs beautifully no matter what you do with it.

Located at the Water Users Site just outside of Mesa, the Salt River is easy to get to. Furthermore it sits far enough from the city that it feels like you have left the Valley behind entirely. For couples looking for something diverse with desert, this is the location I recommend most. A Salt River photoshoot offers something that is hard to come by near Phoenix — water and desert in the same frame.

Practical Tips for Your Salt River Photoshoot

Best Time of Year

I shoot at the Salt River from fall through spring. October through May offers the most comfortable temperatures for an outdoor session in the Phoenix area. Moreover the desert light during those months is warm and golden in a way that the harsh summer sun simply cannot match. Summer sessions are possible but the heat makes them challenging so I generally recommend avoiding June through September.

What to Wear

Flowing dresses photograph beautifully at the Salt River and move well in the desert breeze. Since you will likely be in or near the water, wear something you do not mind getting a little wet. Sandals or bare feet work well for water shots. Furthermore I always discourage heels. The terrain is rocky and uneven and you will want to feel comfortable and relaxed throughout your session.

Parking and Access

The Water Users Site off Bush Highway is the access point I use for Salt River photoshoots. Parking requires a Tonto National Forest pass which costs between $8 and $12 and can be purchased on arrival or in advance online. Plan to arrive with enough time to get settled before we start shooting.

What to Expect

A Salt River session moves through a few distinct areas of the location. We start at the river where the water and desert backdrop give us the most variety early in the session. From there we make our way up toward the rocky boulders where the views open up and the surrounding mountains come into frame. Finally we end at an overlook that gives a sweeping perspective of the whole landscape. Each area has its own feel and together they tell a much fuller story of the location than staying in one spot ever could.

Salt River Engagement Sessions — Real Examples

The best way to show you what a Salt River photoshoot can look like is to let the sessions speak for themselves. Every couple brings something different to this location and the variety of moments that come out of it never gets old.

Some couples wade straight into the water without hesitation. Others prefer to stay on the banks and let the river serve as a backdrop. Either way the Salt River has a way of bringing out a natural ease in people that makes for some of the most candid and genuine photos of any location I shoot at in the Phoenix area.

The rocky boulders further up from the river add a completely different energy to the session. The elevation gives you mountain views in every direction and a sense of just how vast the Sonoran desert really is. By the time we reach the overlook at the end the light has usually dropped low and the whole landscape glows with beautiful blue hour colors.

Below are examples from several different Salt River sessions showing the variety this location has to offer.
